The Portuguese Society of Materials -. SPM, was established in May 15, 1981. The notarial deed was signed by Antera de Seabra, Maria Emilia Rosa, Armindo Jorge, Pádua Loureiro and Barbedo Magalhães.


The first meeting/congress of SPM – “MATERIAIS’83” was held from 16 to 18 May 1983, at LNEC (Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil) in Lisbon. The event was organized by Manuel Amaral Fortes and Maria Emília Rosa, Instituto Superior Técnico (IST).


The Journal Materials Science & Technology, the official publication of the SPM was released. The contributions published covering both the fundamentals of materials science and the technological application of engineering materials are subject to a referee process.


MATERIAIS’2001, held at the University of Coimbra, 9-11 April, was the first Congress of SPM to obtain international recognition. Since then English is the meeting official language.


Starting in 2003, SPM started the anual celebration of Materials World Day, as a collaboration between SPM, FEMS (Federation of European Materials Societies) and the College of Materials Engineering Committee of the Portuguese Association of Engineers.


Within SPM and its Technical Committee Forest Materials, the Cork Thematic Network was created, leading subsequently to REDECOR – Thematic Network of Cork Oak.


SPM was recognized as a Public Utility Association by Order of the Prime Minister, published in the Official Gazette on July 2, 2009. 


After negotiations in 2013, SPM started a partnership with Elsevier, in order to internationalize its journal Science & Technology of Materials. The first issues came out in 2014


FEMS welcomes Gian Luca Garagnani (AIM Italy), Sten Johansson (Chairman SFMT, Sweden) and Paula Vilarinho (President SPM, Portugal) who were elected to join the Executive Committee as new executive officers.
